Summary of Incident:
On 3-18-09 at 5:01 p.m., the Tomah Police Department received
information that a subject was seen near the Greyhound Bus station in
possession of a handgun and a hunting knife. The handgun and hunting
knife were in the subject’s backpack. The subject was attempting to get
to LaCrosse and indicated he would be walking to the Tomah bar district
to see if he could get a ride to LaCrosse. Officers obtained a
description of the subject and began to search for him. Officers
eventually located the subject inside a tavern in downtown Tomah and
identified him as Douglas L. Heacox. Douglas was found to be a convicted
felon and admitted to possessing a handgun in his backpack.
Douglas was taken into custody and a subsequent search incident to a
lawful arrest revealed a Taurus .45 semi-automatic pistol, two magazines
loaded with hollow point bullets and a large hunting knife in the
backpack. Douglas is currently incarcerated in the Monroe County Jail
and charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Carrying a
Concealed Weapon. Additionally, the Department of Corrections placed a
Probation and Parole Hold on Douglas.
